hi guys welcome back to kids corner today we’re gonna teach you how to become an archaeologist archaeologists are very important they look at the past so that we can understand the present and the future. Let me show you how it’s done first of all you need to find a place where you think there might be things from the past and the best place is to look just to look at the rubbish dump or to look at where someone made fire so luckily we found a old fireplace or maybe a young flip fireplace so by digging through this we will find out we lived here before us.
Let’s have a look ok guys so first of all you need to make sure that your place that you’re doing your archeological dig a smart off very neatly you don’t want to just dig in any direction and then you start documenting the exact location of your archeological dig.
And now we’re on Olduvai Gorge and there are we know there’s a lot of a lot of history here so let’s see what we find in the first layer so the nearest things are always on top and all the things are deep at the bottom so we’re gonna scoop the first layer and then we see and we sift through it and then we have a look who was here before us ah.
We can find some animal droppings so we know there was some animals walking around here so then your assistant will make notes of what you find we found some animal droppings so differently. There are some animals that Olivia excellent and then we’ll put it there and put in a small bag so we can make notes then we will sift through more things ah we can find some charcoal this means someone made a fire so the these charcoal things are very important because you can send it to a laboratory and then I can find out how old this carbon is so we will send it off and they will tell us that it’s one week old that’s the last fire that was made here and then we go through there. Do we find any golden beads look very carefully guys you know that there are some very famous archaeologist Ostrow dad you will definitely remember a lot of cruft ask your mummy she will definitely remember Indiana Jones doesn’t look like they are one piece of charcoal yeah this might be me to eat the bones back into the fire put that one there so as you can see guys very patient okay so it doesn’t look like we have too much in the top layer.
Let’s just check this side this is layer one of our archeological excavation do I find any golden beads just more charcoal so these people made a lot of fire yeah okay Chuck okay so we’ve got all the big pieces of charcoal these ones will all be more or less from the same time but you know you can go look at your garden make a similar archeological excavation and go find out you look great before you look your animal droppings with that one there so in the first layer they are just very recent things but it still tells us what’s going the exciting thing is guys you never know what you’re gonna find okay nothing much there let’s see oh look at that through this that looks like a piece of paper ah
[Music] here’s a $1 note so now we know guys there was someone here interesting and now we can see this notices from 2017 so we know this person from America must have been here later than 2017 excellent money you know you should really look after your money better than letter and leave it in the fireplace okay guys so that’s the end of layer 1 and layer 1 we know they were American people here there were some animals that did their droppings and people made a lot of fire excellent nice now we go to layer – so layer 2 should be older then layer 1 ok that is walk charcoal Oh then we find an artifact from the light plastic edge look at that let’s make a note something from the lead plastic age mates plastic age and we go more to layer two ah you find another thing something from the very late Iron Age looks like coca-cola yeah that’s hard work it’s so rewarding
[Music] no it just looks like they’re with people that threw away their plastic and the bottle caps here can you believe that that’s why you always pick up the things you go camping staying somewhere in the wild okay guys so that’s layer two now we’re going to go to layer three that should be even older than their G let’s have a look so layer three you can see as less ash this might be a time before people make fires here so I’m just getting darker uh-huh you see here we have something if you want to be an archaeologist yeah must have a wild imagination [Music] what I found here could be stone tool that was used to maybe skin an animal scrape the skin off a very sharp edge this must be late Stone Age late Stone Age [Music] oh wow guys what an interesting interesting thing I found here found a white MSI bead necklace broke well you [Music] find some more animal droppings and another mess I’d eat now are we really sure this and Mehsud roping look these animal droppings looks like an Impala that’s not as fresh as the first ones so it must be older alright that was a good find you know just any player 3 see if it’s any so you see it in this level you don’t find any plastic any bottle tops must have been before the time we’re a plastic bottle and couple color caps excellent just one more and more dropping at the same time a little bit more chocolates means people still make fire that’s a layer 3 so as such hard work sweating in the Sun okay okay guys now we’re going to lay a for even longer ago let’s see what we found in layer 4 oh look at that quickly we can really see this looks like a stern edge tool that will used to make other tools so this used to be the rock that things like this way made from so you get it on top and then you get this piece and then you can make a scraper out of it so and see there some smooth surfaces Wow so this is a little bit older than this it’s a Middle Stone Age oh and some SI beads again that’s you know one level four and a little bit of charcoal so not that much fire [Music] you know chef alex is not gonna be happy that I’m using this cookie so but we have important work to do her look immediately another mess I be they must have stake it for quite a while Ashley much they’ll have to send us away to get tested here living the same sitting away so the deeper you go generally the list is you will find but it all please see this rock is just a normal rock it doesn’t have any of the shop faces this one comes just throw away look this might be a lot of pottery this is quite an interesting this is a real find [Music] small piece of the but one piece of clay but in level Oh see we have two guys that I look after the rubbish again and this one is a lot older than the first one you remember guys there’s a full moon – still making fires [Music] interesting turn we have enough chopper from this layer he dated this looks like early Stone Age didn’t see that maybe it was a Arrowhead something gonna start to stick stats I want so really interesting stern to level four start oops busy and make a mess you might lose a golden Reiner to go through everything here we have something interesting I would swap reserve to leave in cinders also to get dated that in a second people Swit Latia keep this movement similar to the lab oh all of a sudden we get a lot of mess I feed so this is maybe a period of time [Music] three silly lot small mess are bees in this level lots of mess IP her hard work guys so at the end of the day after a lot of hard work you can then put the pieces of the story together and that’s the imagination count so what I have here is it looks like there were some people that used old stone tools that were your first then there were people that maybe had settlements here and I used wood maybe hats then we had people that use more fine stun tools so they were much clever and needed sharp things then we definitely had some Messiah because they left a necklace on as ideas behind none of these people had any letter then maybe the Homo sapiens from modern day came along they left behind the bottle caps and the plastic not caring and there was even one lady who left the money can you believe that and luckily there were still some wildlife and you know this but the dropping stuff out and that from today’s work is the picture that we found from our archeological excavation ok guys join us next time for kids corner and then we can dig even deeper into the past I’m also going to really say thank you to Rosa and the Esha you know they came to visit us and they left us from medicine and lots of food and they were the friendliest kids and friendliest people that you have seen for a very long time thank you very much
