An image of an exceedingly uncommon fish dubbed the “deep sea monster” has gone viral after a tourist discovered it on US shores.

According to Wionews, Jay Beiler discovered the “extremely rare” species on Black’s Beach in Torrey Pines, San Diego, “US” on November 13. Initially, he mistook it for a jellyfish, but upon closer examination, he realized he had never seen this species before.

Beiler was intrigued by the unusual creatures and took photographs to share with others. Scientists at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography have identified this creature as a Pacific football fish after receiving these photographs.

In an interview with local media, Beiler stated that the length of this fish is approximately 30 centimeters.

“I have never seen anything like it before. Beiler told NBC 7 San Diego, “At first, I thought it was a jellyfish or something, but after a closer inspection, I realized it was a fish.”

Known scientifically as Himantolophidae, football fish inhabit water approximately one kilometer deep. This species is predominantly found in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. This species was discovered in 1837 by zoology professor Johan Reinhardt.
