Terrifying Moment Hippo Lies Under The Barrel Of A huntєr Gun In Front Of The Cheers Of Visitors
This is horrifying moment an endangered hippo was ѕнσт by a French
huntєr in front of cheering locals after wandering into a village in Senegal.
The animal found its way to the village of Kédougou, in the country’s south and got itself caught in a septic tank.
Police and firefighters were unable to rescue the trapped animal and called François Huard, a professional huntєr who manages the local safari resort Le Relais, to ᴋɪʟʟ it.
He ѕнσт the hippo five times in the head in front of cheering villagers who recorded the distressing footage.
The animal’s body was dragged away and buried under loose soil.
The shooting has sparked outrage from animal activists calling it “ᴍᴜʀᴅᴇʀ” and have demanded an investigation.
Local authorities said the shooting was “for everyone’s benefit”, France24 reports.
Bamba Cissé, a lawyer in Dakar who specialises in crimes against wildlife, said: “The hippo is an endangered species and by law, you can only ᴋɪʟʟ it in a legitimate case of self-defense.
“But the footage shows the animal was trapped in a septic tank and, at the moment it was ᴋɪʟʟed, it didn’t pose a threat to anybody’s life.
“The huntєr said the governor had asked him to do it. We also need to open an investigation to determine the circumstances in which a governor has the power to ask a private citizen to ᴋɪʟʟ an animal.”
Local authorities have not made an official statement, but a man identifying himself as Commander Moussa Ndour, head of wildlife in the village, posted a video on Facebook.
He explained the decision to ᴋɪʟʟ the animal was made by the local governor upon learning there were tranquilliser darts available.
It was only then the French huntєr was ordered to ᴋɪʟʟ the hippo.
At the time of publishing it is unclear if any action will be taken.
